Ms. Shireen De Silva

Founder

A certified Montessori educator through the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), Ms. Shireen De Silva founded Northwest Montessori in 1984 with a heartfelt vision: to bring authentic Montessori education to the Austin community.

For over 41 years, she has dedicated herself to nurturing children and families, creating a warm, supportive environment where every child can grow with confidence, independence, and a genuine love of learning.

Under her leadership, Northwest Montessori has become a trusted and celebrated part of Austin, recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration for excellence as a successful small business. More importantly, Ms. De Silva has joyfully watched generations of children thrive, both within the school’s walls and in their broader communities.

Her lifelong commitment to children and families embodies Northwest Montessori’s mission: to prepare confident, capable, and compassionate learners who will positively impact the world.

In 1984, Shireen and Kenneth moved to Austin, Texas, co-founding Northwest Montessori House of Children with a vision rooted in compassion and education. Shireen was a beloved and inspiring educator — deeply committed to her students, staff, and families. Thanks to her leadership, the school flourished, becoming a community cornerstone honored by both the State of Texas and the White House for its remarkable impact.

More than 40 years later, Northwest Montessori continues to thrive — a lasting tribute to Ms. Shireen De Silva’s extraordinary life’s work.
